Is Jesus the Promised Messiah of the Bible?
Is Jesus the promised Messiah, the Holy One of Israel, the anointed one of God? As a Jewish believer in Jesus, I am often asked this question. How do I know He is, I am often asked.
The surest way to find out it to examine the Jewish Bible concerning the Messiah.
The following texts have been recognized as messianic prophesy by rabbis and scholars and are all from the “Old Testament” which some refer to as the “Jewish Bible” (The entire Bible is Jewish but that is a different topic for another time:-)
The scepter shall not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. (Genesis 49:10)
The Messiah was to come from the tribe of Judah. Jesus (Yeshua) did! (Heb 7:14)
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,On the throne of David and over his kingdom,To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness. From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)
The Messiah was to be a descendant of David. Jesus was! (Luke 1:32,33)
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, shall call his name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)
The Messiah was to be born of a virgin. Jesus was! (Matt 1:18-25)
But thou, Bethlehem Ephrathah, which art little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting. (Micah 5:2)
The Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem. Jesus was born in Bethlehem!
So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. (Daniel 9:25-26)
The Messiah would be “cut off” and die a violent death in approximately 32 AD. Jesus did! (Luke 23:33)
“I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.’” (Psalm 2:7)
The Messiah is to be the son of God. Jesus is!(John 3:16-18)
By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of the living. For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? (Isaiah 53:8)
The Messiah would die for our sins. Jesus did! (2 Corinthians 5:21)
I am poured out like water,And all my bones are out of joint;
My heart is like wax;It is melted within me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You lay me in the dust of death.
For dogs have surrounded me;
A band of evildoers has encompassed me;
They pierced my hands and my feet.
I can count all my bones.
They look, they stare at me; (Psalm 22:14-17)
The Messiah would die by crucifixion. Jesus did! * This form of execution was not known to David writing 800 years earlier. (Luke 23:33)
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol;
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. (Psalm 16:10)
The Messiah Would Be Resurected. Jesus Was! (1 Corinthians 15:4)
He came and died for our sins, 3 days later after his death by crucifixion, rose from the grave. The Bible paints the picture of the Messiah! The Suffering Servant and the Reigning King! The Suffering Servant has come and we await His promised coming again as the King of King and Lord of Lords!
The promised Jewish Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) is the “reason for the season!”
Have you made the decision to invite Him into your heart so that you would be forgiven for all your sins (past, present and future) and have eternal life?
If you haven’t, I hope and pray that you will. He is the greatest gift you will ever know.
